How to Organize Your Closet

Are you finding that lately it’s been difficult to put things away in your closets? Are you running out of hangers for your clothes? When you go to grab something off a shelf, do five things come tumbling down on your head? Are several pairs of shoes missing their mates? If you answered yes to any of these questions, it’s probably time to start some closet organization tasks.

While it can be difficult to let go of certain items you’ve had for years, taking some time annually to organize your closet is an important job to add to your to-do list. You’ll not only add more storage space back to your home, but you’ll also spend less time getting ready each day when you can easily find that article of clothing you want to wear!

Closet Organization Ideas for a De-Cluttered Closet

First of all, focus on one closet at a time so you don’t become overwhelmed by the task at hand. Once one closet is clean and organized, you’ll probably be more motivated to continue with other closets in your home, too! Here are a few other easy closet organization tips that will have you on your way to a de-cluttered, tidy closet in just a few hours:

  1. Remove everything from the closet. Taking everything out of the closet is the essential first step in the organization process, even though it might seem a bit overwhelming! However, by taking this step you’ll be able to easily see how much you’ve been hoarding in the far reaches of your closet.
  2. Create an inventory of items. Designate a room or space (like the bed) for your belongings as you’re removing them from the closet. Try to keep similar items together so you can take an inventory on how much stuff you truly have. Put purses in one pile, shoes in another, and “like” clothing together, like sweaters or tank tops, etc. Then, you can go through the belongings and create Keep, Toss, or Donate piles.
  3. Eliminate items that could go elsewhere. Sometimes, people find that they’re storing items in the closet that could really get placed somewhere else. Maybe you ran out of room in the kitchen and are storing small appliances. Or, perhaps at the end of football season all that equipment just got shoved into the depths of the closet until next year. Get these items out of the closet so they aren’t taking up precious space for your everyday clothing and accessories.
  4. Give it a good cleaning. Now that everything is out of the closet, spend a little time wiping down the shelves and vacuuming or washing the floors. You can even consider freshening it up with some new paint before you put all your belongings back in it.
  5. Figure out a system. Think of the items you need on a daily basis and make sure you’re putting things back into your closet accordingly. You can rotate your wardrobe on a seasonal basis, so keep those t-shirts and tank tops up front during the warm months and the sweaters and flannels in the back. Organize your belongings in a way that makes the most sense to you.

Remember, you can always consider hiring a “personal trainer of stuff” to assist with the job. Move Coordinators has a trained professional organizer on hand to tackle the toughest of projects. Contact us today for more information on our hourly packages.
